Name: Sommerro – to open September 2022

Location: Frogner, Oslo, Norway

Number of Keys: 231 plus 56 residences

Seller: The site was the former HQ of Oslo Lysverker

Buyer: Nordic Choice Hotels, owned by Petter Stordalen and headed up by Torgeir Silseth, CEO. The deal is a collaboration between Petter Stordalen, the Varner brothers and Aspelin Ramm.

Sommerro, a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, is the latest independent venture from Nordic Hotels & Resorts and will be housed in the former headquarters of Oslo Lysverker, the city’s original electrical company.

Nordic Hotels & Resorts is a company within the Nordic Choice Hotels group, which owns and operates 40 hotels under its own independent brands.

Sommerro, set to open its doors in September 2022, will feature 231 rooms with 56 branded residences, four restaurants and three bars, meeting and event spaces, a 200-seat theatre, a gym and wellness space, and a rooftop pool, sauna and terrace.

Local firm LPO Architects will work in collaboration with studio GrecoDeco on the project. Original artwork by Norwegian artist Per Krohg will be featured throughout the property, along with unique pieces such as a giant wall fresco and a ceiling mural.

The rooftop terrace will be home to the Nordic-Japanese Tak Oslo restaurant. Other dining spots include outposts from Barramon, a Spanish tapas and wine bar, as well as Plah, a popular local restaurant. Ekspedisjonshallen is the hotel’s all-day dining spot located in the former hall where the public once paid their electricity bills, and the central sunken floor area will be converted into a bar. To Søstre, adjacent to the all-day restaurant, will serve afternoon teas.

Vestkantbadet, one of the few public baths left in Norway, has been expanded into an 8,000-square-foot underground wellness area. It will be open to hotel guests and the public, featuring several treatment rooms, restored Roman baths, a gym with infrared sauna, and a cold plunge pool.

For meetings and events, the hotel can accommodate between 12 and 150 people. Rooms range from a collection of four playful rooms, one flexible meeting space, a break-out area, a library, and intimate screening room. Eight historical rooms on the property’s Heritage floor will be outfitted with technology and available to rent.

Additionally, Lysverker Scene theatre can hold 200 people and will host intimate events open to the public.

“Our vision is to re-define Oslo’s hospitality landscape by creating a new kind of hotel built on Frogner’s classic and creative neighbourhood spirit,” said Jarle Moen, managing director of Sommerro. “Made by the local community, Sommerro will be an open house for all where visitors and locals can work, sleep, eat, play and recharge. Together, we are creating an inspiring space where kindred souls and culture-makers can gather in cosy corners or pop by for a range of experiences from intimate gatherings and work meetings to late-night movie screenings and wine tastings in our library.”

Aspelin Ramm, led by CEO Gunnar Bøyum, will own 50 percent of the new hotel. 56 stylish apartments will be built next to the hotel. According to Finansavisen, the price per square meter will start at 109,000 crowns.

The two largest apartments have their own gardens, terraces and balconies. The Penthouse apartment will have a terrace of 56 square meters, a balcony of 41 square meters and a garden of 38 square meters.
