The Properties: Two unique hotels, once both owned by Swiss hotelier Cesar Ritz…now owned by The Barclay Brothers (London), owners of several things, including the Daily Telegraph newspaper, Sark in the Channel Isalnds, Ellerman Investments and Mohamed Al-Fayed (Paris), once famous owner of Harrods in London and Fulham football club, bought the hotel in 1979.
London includes the hotel, tea-room, restaurants, bar and a casino, and was opened in 1906 by Cesar Ritz…and was recently owned by the Bracewell Smith family, who built the Park Lane Hotel (now Sheraton/Marriott) in 1920, who sold the Ritz to Trafalgar House (Cunard) in 1976 for £2.76m. Sir Guy Bracewell Smith was also Chairman of Arsenal Football Club until 1962.
Trafalgar House sold The Ritz to the Barclay Brothers for £75m in 1995, via a boutique hotel agent, Tony Brett. The rumoured asking price today is £800m.
In 2018 the turnover was £47m, EBITDA of £15m.
The Ritz Paris, founded by Cesar Ritz in 1898 with chef Auguste Escoffier. The hotel was bought in 1979 by Mohamed Al-Fayed for US$20m. He then spent $250m over 10 years for renovation…In 2012 the hotel was treated to a further €400m refurb.
We could go on for hours as to the virtues and excellence of both hotels….
